F&B companies shunning high fructose corn syrup

More packaged food and beverage (F&B) producers are dumping popular sweetener, high fructose corn syrup, according to business information company, Datamonitor.

Its Productscan Online database reports that the number of new F&B products launched worldwide claiming that they contain no high fructose corn syrup has nearly tripled thus far this year, compared to all of 2006.

This jump is dramatic especially when in 2003, just six new beverages made label claims that they were free of high fructose corn syrup.

While the medical case against high fructose corn syrup isn’t exactly crystal clear, a 2007 International Food Information Council Foundation study found that 60 percent of American consumers said they were trying to consume less high fructose corn syrup.

Larger F&B companies such as Kraft Foods, Dannon and Del Monte Foods have also removed high fructose corn syrup from their products.

This has led to the growing interest in alternative sweeteners such as agave and stevia.
