Agilent Technologies Inc. has introduced the Rice Oligo DNA microarray 44K RAP-DB, a new microarray that is based on the genome information compiled by the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS) in Japan.
The NIAS, funded by Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, established the Rice Genome Resource Center to help researchers discover genomic-based ways to improve this staple crop.
This new product enables researchers to simultaneously characterize tens of thousands of rice genes associated with biological functions, growth processes and stress responses.
In addition to whole genome coverage, the new Rice Oligo DNA microarray 44K RAP-DB is the most accurate rice microarray available. The probe set is based on the Rice Annotation Project Database (RAP-DB), considered the gold standard of japonica rice.
The gene annotations have been curated by rice researchers around the world, making RAP-DB a powerful tool for interpreting data.
There are four 44K microarrays on each 1-in. x 3-in. slide, for economy in cost and processing time.
Hiroshi Takatsuji, Ph.D., is the NIAS investigator. His team used this new-generation microarray to identify the WRKY45 transcription factor, considered important for conferring resistance to two major rice diseases: fungal blast and bacterial blight.
