Rexam, the global consumer packaging company and the world's leading beverage can maker, has opened a new aluminium beverage can plant in the Chelyabinsk region in the Urals.
The new plant, located in Argayash, is the second can making facility to be built by Rexam in Russia.
It will initially have one production line with a capacity of 700 million cans per year.
The plant will produce 50cl cans for a number of customers including Baltika, Heineken, Efes and SunInbev.
It will create some 100 new jobs in the area, supporting the local economy and driving the development of the beverage can market in Russia.
Tomas Sjölin, Sector Director, Beverage Can Europe & Asia for Rexam, commented: "Cans currently account for 16% of all beer and FAB drinks packaging sold in Russia. Last year the market grew just over 12% and this is expected to rise in 2008.
"Along with our plant in Naro Fominsk and the acquisition of Rostar at the start of this year, we are well positioned to develop our Russian business and serve our customers."
