Singapore – July 27, 2022 – The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) issues a recall for Best One Assorted Cake (banana flavour) and Bake King’s Mixed Fruits.

The agency reports the Singapore Food Regulations found exceedingly high levels of sorbic acid on Best One Assorted Cake (banana flavour), which was imported by Deli X-press from Malaysia and has an expiration date of August 31, 2022. Sorbic acid is an approved food additive that helps preserve food items. Consumption of the product does not pose any significant health risks since it has low toxicity.

Bake King’s Mixed Fruits by Gim Hin Lee was also recalled after the detection of sulphur dioxide, an undeclared allergen. The products are available in 250g, 500g, 1kg, 2kg, and 5kg batches and are packed in Singapore. The recall includes all batches and best before dates.

SFA reports that sulphite is a common food additive, and is usually tested for the gaseous substance, sulphur dioxide.

In a news release, SFA shares, “Presence of excessive levels of sulphur dioxide in food could result in allergenic reactions in individuals who are hypersensitive to sulphite.”

The report adds, “Symptoms include hives, itchiness, stomachache, diarrhoea, and vomiting. The presence of sulphite does not pose a food safety issue to consumers at large, except for those who are allergic to sulphites.”

Based on the Sale of Food regulation, companies must declare ingredients known to cause hypersensitivity on their food packaging labels.
