Grand opening celebrates coffee, creativity, and community with Incography Final Day

Expat. Roasters, Indonesia’s leading specialty coffee brand, is excited to announce the grand opening of its fourth store in Surabaya and its largest to date — Expat. Roasters Dharmahusada. This 450 m² coffee shop and restaurant introduces a unique farm-to-table concept unlike any other Expat. Roasters location, featuring an interactive garden surrounding the store. These in-house gardens provide some ingredients for the store’s food menu, offering a sustainable and enriching experience for customers.

The new location will serve Expat. Roasters’ full range of premium beans, including single origins such as Bali Kintamani and West Java, alongside the brand’s popular blends like Patria, Nomad, Habitat, Jozo, and Terra. Coffee lovers can also enjoy the newly released cold brew cans, perfect for those on the move.

“Our Dharmahusada store is a special one for us,” says Shae Macnamara, Founder and CEO of Expat. Roasters. “We’ve combined our passion for coffee with a deeper connection to the land by creating a sustainable farm-to-table concept that aligns with our commitment to quality and innovation. We want our customers to enjoy not only the best coffee but also food that’s locally sourced and fresh from our garden.”

The visionary architectural design of Expat. Roasters Dharmahusada was led by Wilson Harkhono, Principal Architect at WHAstudio in conjunction with Sidney-based X plus O Design Studio. The integration of a hydroponic garden and coffee farm into the store’s layout creates a seamless connection between nature and hospitality.

“Designing Expat. Roasters Dharmahusada was about creating an immersive space that reflected the brand’s ethos of sustainability and quality,” says Wilson Harkhono. “We wanted to design a place where people could experience the entire journey of coffee — from farm to cup — in a way that is both modern and respectful of nature.”

The grand opening coincides with Incography, Expat. Roasters’ inaugural Indonesian coffee photography competition featuring an exhibition of work from 40 Incographyfinalists displayed.

On stage, Rio Motret, renowned Indonesian photographer and judge of Incography, hosted a talk where he shared insights on “Building a Career in Photography.” He discussed his own professional journey and offered advice to Expat. Roasters’ customers and Incography participants on how to turn their passion into a successful career, while also touching on the creative process behind coffee photography.

“The participants captured the essence of coffee in such unique and beautiful ways,” said Rio Motret. “It was incredible to see their passion and creativity shine through their photography. I’m honored to have been part of this inspiring journey and to witness the talent that Incography has brought together.”

The winners of Incography were announced at the event. In the Professional category, Bayu Catur Pamungkas (general capture) and Febrian A. (Expat-themed capture) took home the grand prize, while Irwandi (general capture) and Anna Theodore ( Expat-themed capture) were awarded in the Amateur category. The winners received cash prizes, vouchers, certificates, and merchandise worth over 50 million Rupiah.

This latest store is part of Expat. Roasters’ ambitious expansion strategy for 2024, which will see six new stores across the country. Following the launch of Dharmahusada, Expat. Roasters will open a new store at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport in early November, with locations in Medan and Makassar to follow later this year.

Other Expat. Roasters locations include two stores in Bali (Jalan Petitenget and Beachwalk Shopping Mall), three in Surabaya (Graha Family, West Surabaya, Juanda International Airport, and Hokky Buah Citraland), and one in Jakarta (Mori Building, Sudirman, Central Jakarta).

Expat. Roasters Dharmahusada, East Surabaya is located at Jl. Dharmahusada Indah Timur No.301, Kec. Mulyorejo, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60225 and operates from 7 AM to 10 PM every day.
