Tosaf launches UV barrier for thin transparent food packaging

September 2023 – Tosaf’s newly developed barrier solution UV9389PE EU ensures that clear packaging films offer a high blocking effect against UV radiation in the wavelength range from 200 nm to 380 nm, even at low thickness. Thus, this additive efficiently protects foods from discolouration, vitamin and flavour loss as a result of the degrading effects of artificial light to which they are exposed during storage, shipping and on the shelf. In this way, Tosaf’s new UV blocker contributes to the prevention of food wastage due to premature spoilage.

Unlike conventional mineral-based products of this type, the optical properties and, in particular, the transparency of films finished with UV9389PE EU are almost completely retained. Further advantages are the high efficiency, even at very low dosages as well as the minimal influences on the behaviour during production and further processing of the films, including printing and lamination. The range of applications extends beyond foodstuffs to other industrial film applications where the protection of sensitive goods from UV radiation is required.

The new UV blocker UV9389PE EU complements Tosaf’s broad portfolio of stabiliser masterbatches to maximise resistance against UV light. Their applications range from agricultural films to stretch, shrink, and industrial packaging and big bags (FIBC). They also cover injection moulded parts, extruded pipes and sheets, fibres and nonwovens, roofing membranes, and many others.

Beyond UV blockers, Tosaf’s portfolio includes other additives that can contribute to greater sustainability, including antioxidants, moisture and odour absorbers, flow improvers, and chain extenders.

For over three decades, Tosaf (https://www.tosaf.com/) has been developing and manufacturing high-quality additives, compounds, and colour masterbatches for the plastics industry. With the aim of providing for its customers’ every need, it has continuously grown and developed its offering, production capacity, and global reach, becoming a truly close to the market, global organization. Servicing customers in over 50 countries in Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and the Middle East, Tosaf has over 1400 employees spread throughout its production sites, warehouses, sales, and distribution offices around the world.

Tosaf CEO Amos Megides established the company in Israel in 1986 and still stands at its head, leading and inspiring his team to always uphold the following three pillars: Exceptional service, the highest quality and continuous innovation. Tosaf’s major shareholders include Megides Holdings Ltd. and the Ravago Group.
