Immune health through nutrition key to resilience, IADSA report says

The International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA) has released a new Mind the Gap resource titled “Fighting Fit: Building Resilience Through Nutrition“. In it are key findings developed by IADSA on the topic of resilience and the role immune health plays into building this.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) European policy framework, building resistance is “a key factor in protecting and promoting health and well-being.” And the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasised the importance of the immune system in fighting off bacteria and deadly viruses.

Unfortunately, 2 billion people across the world do not consume enough nutrients that can boost the immune system. This is especially necessary for the elderly who are weaker in this regard. In order to build resilience, consuming healthy food rich in vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D folate; and minerals copper, iron, selenium and zinc are key.

“With inadequate nutrient intakes so widespread, we need to find ways to help people maintain normal immune health and achieve greater resilience. Better nutrition education is key. Acting now could transform the lives of millions of people,” according to Simon Pettman, IADSA Executive Director.

Food, beverage and supplement manufacturing companies need to address this need and provide access to products that can optimise nutrition worldwide.
