Recognition highlights company’s comprehensive Health & Safety Management System and eight-year zero-LTI record at HP Malaysia Manufacturing
Sodexo, a world leader in food services and facilities management, has been awarded the National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Award by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (NCOSH) under the Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysia.
This award acknowledges Sodexo’s comprehensive Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) at HP Malaysia Manufacturing, where the company has been providing food services to more than 1,000 employees since 2016. With a dedicated team of 21 employees on-site, Sodexo has maintained an exemplary safety record, achieving zero Lost Time Incidents (LTIs) since it began operations at HP Malaysia Manufacturing.
“This recognition reflects our belief that safety isn’t a one-person job – it’s the responsibility of every member of our team,” said Paul Francis Chong, Operations Director of Malaysia, Sodexo. “Through our Zero-Harm Mindset and thorough HSMS framework, we’ve created a culture where everyone feels responsible for safety. Our success comes from going beyond physical safety to embrace psychosocial well-being, ensuring open communication and engagement at all levels. This award validates that when everyone participates – from frontline employees to managers – safety becomes more than just a slogan; it becomes a shared commitment and responsibility.”
Sodexo’s HSMS initiatives include a meticulous, multi-tiered safety audit structure that adheres to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) regulations, with monthly internal audits, quarterly external reviews, and bi-monthly HP audits. A QR code-based hazard reporting system across work areas enables employees to report safety issues immediately, making incident response both fast and effective. Going above and beyond the standard proper personal protective equipment (PPE), Sodexo supplies all employees with reflective vests to increase road safety and help them get to and from work with enhanced safety.
To foster a Zero-Harm Mindset, every member of the team is given responsibility and a sense of accountability for the team’s safety. Daily toolbox talks are held to encourage an open safety dialogue where each member of the team is empowered to lead the conversation, a rotating monthly “safety officer” is appointed to increase a sense of responsibility, and innovative communication tools like the “Detective Hazard” comic series, a custom comic featuring team members in near-miss situations, is circulated to drive home the message of safety.
Sodexo collaborates closely with their clients on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). At HP Malaysia Manufacturing, the team maintains an active involvement in the HSE committee and participates in monthly safety meetings, ensuring continuous improvement of safety protocols, hazard reporting systems, and mental health support, all integrated into their daily operations. Together, they host initiatives like Bomba fire safety training, first aid courses, and road safety campaigns.
Dominic Chew, General Manager, HP Malaysia Manufacturing, added, “Sodexo’s dedication to safety aligns perfectly with HP’s commitment to maintaining the highest workplace safety standards. Their proactive approach to safety management and consistent delivery of quality food services has made them a valuable partner over the past eight years.”
